Choosing the Right Pet for Your Home

Looking for a pet to put under the tree this year? Christmas is right around the corner and some of us are shopping for the perfect furry addition to the family.

Adding to your family in this way is fun and exciting, but research is imperative. Most animals that are abandoned or put up for adoption are from circumstances where the owner did not consider some of these factors.

Here are a few things to guide you through your selection process:

1.    Research the cost of caring for the pets you have in mind. Some breeds/species have special needs that can get pricey, ultimately leading to unexpected stress.

2.    If there are children in your home, consider what would be kid-friendly options. Most shelters and pet stores will allow your family to interact with pets to see if they are a good fit.

3.    Think about how much your pet will have to be left alone each day. Some pets need more exercise daily or may not enjoy being left alone for long periods of time. If you work long hours or travel frequently these would be the animals you should avoid getting.

4.    Housing arrangement limitations; do you have space for the pet you’re aiming for?  If you’re in a rental property, check with the owner, or review your lease. Are there breeds or weight restrictions?

5.    Do you have other pets in your home? Animals can be protective of their family. Depending on the species, your current pet may not appreciate sharing its space. A pet trainer or animal behavioralist can be a great resource in making a determination based on this.

During your search, it’s important to consider what the best fit for your home would be. It’s so much more than, “Awww isn’t this the cutest.” Proper preparation leads to a happy owner and a happy pet.
